My Dad has an abscess about the size of a softball in one of his lungs, he was admitted to intensive care on the 11th and will be out of commission for two months at least, and then who knows what will happen afterward. The abscess is too large to remove so I'm not sure what the therapy is.

My Mom emailed me this information several days ago but I only just found it an hour ago.

Currently factoring all this into the calculations.

Has he been having this and/or other health problems? They can treat it by draining it with a needle (not pleasant) and/or most likely IV antibiotics. If it's unrelated to any other stuff, and he's generally otherwise healthy, it can probably be cleared up and he can go on his way.
Good luck to him getting over it.

I guess he's on serious drugs at the moment, which will take two months to have their complete effect. I'll find out more eventually but it seems they're going the way of antibiotics at least.

Youch! Do you know why he got an infection in his lung? Smoker; inhalation of dangerous chemicals at work or home; accidental inhalation of some sort of solid particle that scratched the interior of his lung? I believe abscesses are very treatable with antibiotics (and probably needle aspiration with one as big as your dad's)---I hope he heals up quickly!!

He's been sick for a very long time, lives in a very polluted city, and in a very polluted apartment. He's had a serious coughing condition for years and I guess now they've figured out at least some of the cause of that.

He has some kind of 401k that got destroyed last year, the remnants of which were being saved for "retirement". Maybe tax season was good this year? I dunno. I'm actually curious as to how he's going to afford the two-month hospital stay and the attendants he'll need forever. Maybe there is a Sick Republican Club for him somewhere? Except those guys were never that great with the health care.

So weird to learn about it by mistake on Father's Day.
